The victim of a fatal tree-cutting accident in Oak Bay has been identified by social media posts and an online fundraiser.

Eddie Mather, a resident of Australia, was named by multiple Facebook posts as the arborist who died while pruning trees on McNeill Avenue near Byng Street on Tuesday.

A fundraiser has been started online to return Mather’s remains to his family in Australia.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we create this page for such a beautiful friend, brother and son,” the fundraiser says.

“As if this loss could be any more difficult on the people closest to Eddie, his family now need to liaise with funeral coordinators across two countries to try and bring Eddie home to Australia.”

The fundraiser is asking for donations to help ease the financial burden on Mather’s family to bring him home.

As of Friday afternoon, the fundraiser has raised over $28,000 of a $30,000 goal.

Mather’s death is being investigated by Worksafe BC but is not being treated as suspicious.
