Passengers are now required to wear masks at all BC Transit bus stops

Masks have been required on public transit since August 24, but now passengers are required to wear them while waiting for the bus.

BC Transit announced on Friday that they have updated their policy to align with new mandatory mask orders implemented by the province’s health officials.

The transit policy includes spots where passengers are boarding or waiting for vehicles, such as platforms, bus stops, bus loops and bus exchanges.

The company also added that face shields will no longer be considered a substitute for a non-medical mask or other face covering.

Mandatory mask exceptions are in place for these individuals:

  • People with health conditions or with physical, cognitive or mental impairments who cannot wear one
  • People who cannot remove a mask on their own
  • Children under the age of 12

Bus drivers who are alone behind a protective driver door or vinyl panel are also allowed to go mask-free.

“Under the order, BC Transit supervisors and managers will now have authority to enforce compliance with the assistance of local authorities if necessary,” the transportation agency stated.

“It is important to remember there are reasons a person may not be able to wear a face covering.”

Customers who see someone without a mask are asked not to attempt to enforce the orders themselves.

BC Transit asks customers to please be kind to each other, and if someone is not wearing a face-covering to assume they meet exception criteria.
