49 more British Columbians die of COVID-19, as province records 2,146 cases since Friday

The B.C. Ministry of Health has reported 2,146 new cases of novel coronavirus in the province since Friday, bringing the total number of cases to 42,943.

Between Friday and Saturday, there were 698 new cases; 689 more cases were reported between Saturday and Sunday; and 759 more COVID-19 cases were added between Sunday and Monday.

In total, 10,536 of the cases are in the Vancouver Coastal Region, 25,867 in Fraser Health, 787 in Vancouver Island Health region, 2,851 in Interior Health, 1,331 in Northern Health region, and 100 people whose residence is outside of Canada.

The number of active cases has increased by 450 to 10,039 in B.C.

There are now a total of 359 people in hospital due to COVID-19, 87 of whom are in critical care — ICU or acute care units.

49 additional COVID-related deaths were reported over the past three days, and the death toll is now at 647.

11,177 people are in isolation, under active public health monitoring, after exposure to COVID-19.

A total of 31,207 people have recovered from novel coronavirus.

Outbreaks

Three new health care facility outbreaks were reported in the province since Friday. Two outbreaks in Vancouver Island Health region are now over, among others.

There remain a total of 55 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and seven acute-care facilities that have active, ongoing outbreaks.

There remain a number of ongoing COVID-19 exposure sites. B.C. residents are urged to check the BC CDC website for all public alerts about possible exposures to the virus.

Those who may have been exposed are asked to monitor their symptoms, reduce the number of contacts they have, and call 811 to get tested for the virus if they do develop symptoms.

Island Health region

29 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Island Health region over the past three days.

There have been a total of 787 cases of COVID-19 in the region, eight of whom have died. Seven people in the region are currently in hospital, and five of them are in critical care, after contracting the virus.

Island Health reports that as of Friday, December 11, there were 105 active cases in the region. This section will be updated to reflect latest information as of December 14 once it is presented by the health authority.

  • South Vancouver Island  Active cases: 41 (-13) Total Cases: 249 (+1)
  • Central Vancouver Island Active cases: 44 (-32) Total Cases: 341 (+6)
  • North Vancouver Island Active cases: 17 (-14) Total Cases: 166 (-1)

To date, there have been a total of 1,278,078 novel coronavirus tests conducted across B.C., 143,159 of which were done in the Island Health region.

The BCCDC has set up a novel coronavirus telephone information line at 1-833-784-4397 for those who have further questions about this virus.

Anyone concerned that they may have been exposed to, or are experiencing symptoms of the novel coronavirus, should contact their primary care provider, local public health office, or call 8-1-1.

The province has also created the 1-888-COVID-19 line to connect British Columbians needing non-medical information about the pandemic.

As of the time of publication, the total number of COVID-19 patients worldwide has risen to 73,131,713.

Over 1,626,807 people have died from the illness and 51,222,480 have recovered.
