Nanaimo RCMP are investigating the suspicious death of a 59-year-old homeless man who was found dead early Saturday morning.

The deceased was discovered by a member of the public at about 5:45 a.m. in the 400-block of Fitzwilliam Street in the Old City Quarter.

There are reports of a possible altercation the previous night.

“Investigators have learned that later in the evening on Friday December 25th, loud voices were heard coming from the area that the deceased was found, and that the deceased man was last seen at approximately 9:30 pm on the 25th,” said Const. Gary O’Brien.

Officers on scene were able to positively identify the deceased of no fixed address, whom police have had previous interactions with in the past.

“Preliminary investigation by investigators could not determine the cause of death.  The family of the deceased has been notified,” said O’Brien.

Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who heard or saw anything in this area during the evening of Dec. 25 or the early-morning hours of Dec. 26, or interacted with the deceased prior to him being located.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
