Two local First Nations, Snuneymuxw and Snaw’Naw’As, will also have input into the facility’s design as well as job and contract opportunities during construction.

The project is expected to generate 650 direct and 275 indirect jobs, plus an additional 100 jobs associated with spending by contract workers.

The design phase by Stuart Olson Construction Ltd. is expected to begin in January 2021, followed by pre-construction in the first quarter of 2021.

$157 million in capital funding has been set aside for the new correctional facility. which will replace the old one located by Brannen Lake. It is expected to be operational by 2023.

Once completed, it is expected to have sufficient cell capacity to serve Vancouver Island’s needs for the next 10 years.
