Crash near Port Hardy kills passenger and injures driver

A motor vehicle crash on the North Island killed one person and sent another to hospital, according to the RCMP.

The incident occurred on December 5 shortly after 11 a.m. on a stretch of Highway 19 just North of the Port Alice junction.

RCMP say a vehicle travelling southbound on the highway drove onto the right-hand shoulder before veering back towards oncoming traffic. The vehicle then crashed into a ditch on the opposite side of the road.

Emergency crews including Port Hardy Fire Rescue responded to the scene. DriveBC reported that the road was closed between 12 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

The male driver of the vehicle was airlifted to Victoria for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The female passenger was declared dead on scene.

RCMP say neither are residents of Port Hardy, and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.

The incident is still under investigation.

“Thanks to our crews for their hard work on this tough call today, and to the other agencies who are always on our side,” Port Hardy Fire Rescue wrote on Facebook.
