A COVID-19 outbreak was declared at a Qualicum Beach long-term care home on Saturday after one staff member tested positive for the virus.

The outbreak at The Gardens at Qualicum Beach, located at 650 Berwick Rd N, is limited to one unit on the third floor of the facility, according to a statement from Island Health.

The staff member who tested positive for the virus is isolating at home.

Visitation, transfers, and admissions to the long-term care section of the facility have been stopped, but the Independent Living and Assisted Living units are not affected.

Enhanced cleaning and screening measures have been put into place at the facility since the outbreak was declared.

At this time, the long term care facility outbreak and one at Saanich Peninsula Hospital that has tragically claimed three lives, are the only active health care facility outbreaks on Vancouver Island.

Exposure alerts at five schools in the Island Health region remain active as of December 21.

Another exposure notice was sent to families of children who attend View Royal Out of School Care in View Royal on December 20.

This exposure has not yet been listed on the Island Health website.
