The Independent Investigations Office of BC is looking into a police incident in Port Alberni during which a man died.

In a statement released Thursday, IIOBC say they were contacted by BC RCMP after an incident on December 23, at around 6:40 p.m.

According to information provided by RCMP, officers were called to attend the 4200-block of Morton Street after reports of a man who was on the roof of a 12-storey residential building there.

When they arrived, police say they saw the man with a weapon.

Police say while they were talking to the man, he used the weapon on himself, was injured, and collapsed.

Officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to hospital for treatment, but he died after arrival.

IIOBC is now investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man’s death.
