Pool at Juan de Fuca Rec Centre will be reopened in January 2021

After a year-long closure, the pool at Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre is finally slated to reopen early next year.

In a statement released Tuesday, the City of Colwood announced that the pool will be open to swimmers starting January 20, 2021.

“We’re very excited to reopen the pool. It is an essential recreation service that our community relies on,” said Katherine Bck, Aquatics and Fitness Coordinator, in a statement.

“The ability for our community, particularly children, to resume these life skills is very important. We will be operating under strict health guidelines for everyone’s safety.”

The pool was originally closed to the public in March 2020 due to restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Financial challenges of trying to operate during the pandemic proved too costly, and so the pool was kept closed for the remainder of the year.

Programs at the pool will resume in phases, with lane swimming, AquaFit, and leisure swim beginning on a limited basis from January 20 to 31. Reservations for these sessions begin today, December 16.

More sessions will be added February 1 onwards, with reservations for those slots beginning January 13.

Swimming lessons will also begin on February 1st including private, semi-private, family, or small group classes, with modifications for physical distancing — reservations for those can be made starting January 7.

Ongoing COVID-19 restrictions mean all participants are required to reserve their swims in advance.
