Youth threat towards staff member closes Courtenay middle school

Share

Comox Valley RCMP say that a youth threat directed towards a staff member is behind a school closure in Courtenay on Friday.

The closure was the second incident in under two weeks at Lake Trail Middle School, following an earlier threat made by the same youth.

RCMP say that steps have been taken to ensure the safety of the staff member and the community.

“This is an understandably frustrating incident for those in the Lake Trail community,” said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP.

“However, we have to take our time and be vigilant during these investigations to ensure
everyone’s safety.”

School District 71, Youth Probation, and the Ministry of Children and Families are working with the RCMP to resolve the incident.

They say they are taking steps towards a solution that ensures community safety while supporting the youth and his family.

Anyone with additional information on the incidents can call the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and refer to file 2020-19650.

Those who wish to make an anonymous report can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at comoxvalleycrimestoppers.bc.ca.
