428 new cases of COVID-19 reported in B.C. in possible downward trend

The B.C. Ministry of Health reported 428 new cases of COVID-19 across the province on Tuesday, for a total of 54,629 cases since the pandemic began.

New cases were reported in these health regions:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 90
  • Fraser Health: 223
  • Island Health: 9
  • Interior Health: 61
  • Northern Health: 45

“We were able to slow the increase of new cases in mid-December and we want to continue that trend, but the number of new cases and deaths across the province remains high,” Dr. Bonnie Henry stated.

The number of active cases in B.C. has decreased from 6,823 to 6,472.

There are now a total of 367 people in hospital due to COVID-19, 77 of whom are in critical care — ICU or acute care units.

8 more people have died from COVID-related causes, bringing the provincial death toll to 954.

8,596 people are in isolation, under active public health monitoring, after exposure to COVID-19.

A total of 45,999 people have recovered from novel coronavirus.

Outbreaks

One new health-care facility outbreak has declared at St. Paul’s Hospital.

In addition, a public alert has been issued for the Revelstoke region due to a community transmission and a substantial increase in new COVID-19 cases.

In total, there are 53 assisted-living, long-term care homes, seniors’ rental buildings and nine acute-care facilities with ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks.

Island Health

9 new cases were reported in the Island Health region on Monday.

As of Monday morning, there are 122 active cases remaining on the Island. By Health Service Delivery Area, they are:

  • South Island: 54 | Total cases: 352
  • Central Island: 40 | Total cases: 426
  • North Island: 28 | Total cases: 223

No new deaths were reported in the Island Health region. Eight people remain in hospital, including two in intensive care units.

Vaccinations

28,209 people have been inoculated against COVID-19 across B.C. with vaccinations from Pfizer and Moderna.
