A standoff with an armed suspect in Langford on New Year’s Eve ended with a peaceful arrest after several hours.

The standoff began on December 31st at approximately 10:40 p.m. after West Shore RCMP were called for a report of a man armed with a gun.

Police responded to the residence in the 2700 block of Spencer Road and were told that a male suspect had pointed a loaded handgun at another resident inside.

The victim was able to leave the home uninjured and called police.

A large police response was deployed, including the Vancouver Island RCMP Emergency Response Team, police dogs, frontline officers and crisis negotiators.

Nearby residents were evacuated for their own safety and police set up a perimeter to contain the armed and barricaded suspect.

Over four hours later, just before 3 a.m. on January 1st, the suspect complied with police demands and exited the residence.

The 32-year-old man was taken into custody without further incident and has been charged with assault and careless use of a firearm.

After the arrest, West Shore RCMP executed a search warrant on the residence. 14 firearms, ammunition, body armour and the suspect’s firearms license were seized.

The incident remains under investigation.
