An RCMP police dog took a bite out of crime in Nanaimo as he helped nab a suspect wanted on ten outstanding warrants.

Police dog Luca was in a training session with two officers near Seventh St and Victoria Road on Wednesday, January 27th at approximately 11 a.m, when they spotted a man walking roadside.

Cpl Muir, Luca’s handler, recognized the individual as a 35-year-old suspect wanted on multiple warrants.

The officers and Luca drove up alongside the suspect in their service vehicle and told him he was under arrest.

The suspect took off, and Cpl Muir opened the vehicle door to allow Luca to pursue.

After a very short chase, Luca apprehended the man. He received minor dog bites that did not require medical attention.

The suspect was taken to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment and held for a court appearance on Thursday.

He faces charges for theft, obstruction, robbery and breach of an undertaking.

Following his court appearance, the suspect was remanded into police custody until February 2nd.
