Residents forced to jump from windows to escape fire at Port Hardy apartment building

Residents were forced to jump from their windows to escape a fire at an apartment building in Port Hardy late Sunday evening.

Port Hardy Fire Rescue says they were on scene fighting the blaze at the C block of Town Apartments at 11:30 p.m on January 17th.

According to RCMP and eyewitnesses, multiple people fled the blaze through windows on the upper floor.

No one was critically injured, but some had to be taken to hospital to be treated for injuries from falling.

Crews were able to safely clear the building and ensure all residents had been evacuated.

By 1:15 a.m. the fire had been controlled, and by 2:30 a.m. it was fully extinguished. Hydro was shut off to the building as a precaution while crews worked to clean up.

Emergency Support Services have been set up to help residents who have been displaced by the fire.

RCMP are still investigating the cause of the blaze and are asking that anyone with knowledge of the incident contact the Port Hardy detachment at 250-949-6335.
