A Vancouver Island man is in custody and is facing more than 40 charges.

Street Crime Unit officers with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP closed in on the “priority offender” in mid-January, knowing he had numerous warrants and was under a court-ordered condition not to be on Vancouver Island.

Tyler Elrix, 37, was located in Duncan inside a stolen vehicle and had a number of stolen items in his possession, including guitars and jewellery.

Elrix is being held in custody on thirty-seven previous charges along with new charges of theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property, breach of release order, and unlawfully in a dwelling house.

His next court appearance is scheduled to take place on February 2nd.

“This prolific offender has a history of fleeing from police,” said Street Crimes Unit Cpl. Trevor March. “Street Crime Unit officers were able to identify Mr. Elrix and time the arrest to ensure he could not continue evading police, in addition to securing significant evidence to advance this investigation.”
