Wheelchair-bound woman succumbs to injuries after being struck by vehicle in Nanaimo

A woman driving a motorized wheelchair who was hit by a car has died from her injuries, as Nanaimo RCMP continue to investigate.

The collision occurred on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31 2020 at approximately 11:00 a.m, in the 1800 block of Bowen Road in Nanaimo.

The 63-year-old woman was hit by a green Kia Soul as she attempted to cross two northbound lanes outside of the Tim Horton’s on Bowen Road.

She was taken to Nanaimo hospital, where she later died.

RCMP are still investigating and conducted partial road closures on Bowen Road on January 15th as they gathered evidence.

Officers intermittently closed the road from 2 to 3 p.m. as they took measurements from Townsite Road at Bowen Road, and from Bowen Road north to Dufferin Crescent.

Around three to four closures were expected lasting upwards of 10 minutes.

Police are asking that people who were in the vicinity of the collision and may have dashcam footage or cell phone video contact the Nanaimo RCMP detachment at 250-754-2345, and quote file #2020-46146.
