A suspect was caught in the act by Saanich Police during a brazen daylight break and enter at an occupied home.
The homeowner phoned authorities just after 9 a.m. Wednesday to report someone had broken into their residence in the 1000 block of Burnside Road West.
The suspect had gained entry through a basement door and could be heard rummaging inside.
The homeowner fled to a safe location while delivering a description of the suspect to 911 operators.
A neighbour then spotted the suspect running from the property and also called police, providing details including a suspect description and the direction they were fleeing.
Saanich Police officers were able to locate the suspect not far from the residence. He was taken into custody without incident and was found in possession of a bicycle he had stolen from the home.
The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Leslie Brownjohn, a man known to police with a lengthy criminal history.
He has been held in custody on charges of break and enter and theft under $5,000.
