Victoria Police apprehended a man they say was in the midst of a mental health crisis after causing damage to an apartment building early Thursday morning.
VicPD say they were called to a multi-unit residential building in the 300-block of Douglas Street at around 3:30 a.m.
They had received reports of a man running through the hallways, kicking at doors and damaging property.
Multiple residents of the building called police who were concerned for their safety.
Several officers attended and located the man, who had barricaded himself within a suite.
Police say they attempted to negotiate with the man who they learned was undergoing a mental health crisis.
He refused to cooperate with officers and at one point during the incident, a “less-lethal bean bag round” was deployed.
The man surrendered to police around 4:30 a.m. and was taken into custody under the mental health act and was brought to a hospital for a mental health assessment and treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Officers will be recommending charges of mischief.
