One person has been arrested after deliberately setting a fire outside an apartment complex near Tillicum Mall in Saanich.

Just after midnight on Sunday, a fire was reported at a 94-unit residential complex in the 3200-block of Eldon Place. The fire was set in the front entryway of the building.

After the fire was extinguished, investigators obtained video surveillance that identified a possible suspect.

An officer immediately recognized the individual, who was located and taken into custody just a few hours later.

“While the fire was not particularly large in nature and was contained to a plastic bucket,” Const. Markus Anastasiades said in a media release.

“The fact that it was up against an outside wall of this large, 94-unit residential complex presented a very real and serious risk to personal injury,” Anastasiades said.
