Nanaimo RCMP are searching for a pair of suspects in a home invasion investigators believe was specifically targeted.

Police were called to a report of a home invasion in the 700 block of Poplar Street on February 8, 2021 at approximately 8 p.m.

They were told that two men wearing masks, one of them armed with a machete, had broken into the apartment building.

The suspects gained entry to the building and entered an apartment through the unlocked main door.

Three residents were inside and the suspect with the machete struck one of them with the broad side of the machete.

The suspects grabbed a backpack and fled through the patio door. The entire incident lasted less than a minute.

Witnesses describe the suspects as a pair of white men. One of them was described as being approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall.

One of the suspects wore a white jacket, and the other was dressed in dark clothing.

One of the suspects was also described as walking hunched over, looking down at his feet when he stood.

RCMP Police Dog Services responded to the scene and were able to track the suspects to the vicinity of the Departure Bay Motel, but lost the scent afterwards.

“Investigators believe this was a targeted incident and that the public is not at risk,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2021-4796.
