Speed limits on residential streets in Saanich will be reduced to 30 km/h from 50 km/h as part of a three-year pilot project.
On Monday night, Saanich Council determined there is a high level of interest in road safety from the public and that a pilot project would be an opportunity to learn.
Saanich Council unanimously voted in favour of the speed limit changes.
The project will change the default speed limit to 30 km/h in areas without a continuous yellow line on roads without postings.
To permanently change speeds on a particular road, a bylaw would have to be adopted and signs thus posted.
It was initially suggested speed limits be reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h, which some councilors disagreed.
“A speed reduction to 30 km/hr is more likely to save more lives and reduce injury than a reduction to 40 km/hr,” said the report from the Monday night meeting.
