VicPD say they have arrested a man following an alleged assault on a 15-year-old in a tent at Beacon Hill Park on Tuesday.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10 p.m. on April 20th. According to the VicPD, the teenage victim, a youth who is developmentally delayed, was choked by a man in a tent.

Following a large police response to the area, officers say they were confronted by a large group of campers who interfered with their arrest and allegedly assaulted police.

During the confrontation, VicPD says one officer was bit and another was spat upon.

The victim was taken to hospital for what police now say were non-life-threatening but potentially life-altering injuries.

No arrests were made on Tuesday night, but VicPD were able to identify a suspect.

On Wednesday, that suspect was located and arrested at approximately 4 p.m. in Beacon Hill Park.

The 38-year-old male suspect has been taken to cells to await a court date on charges including assault, assault by choking, assault with a weapon, sexual interference, and sexual exploitation.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call VicPD at (250) 995-7654 ext 1. Anonymous reports can be made through Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
