The BC Ministry of Health reported 1,001 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, April 23rd.
There have been 123,758 cases since the pandemic began.
New cases were reported in these health regions:
Vancouver Coastal Health: 215
Fraser Health: 626
Island Health: 26
Interior Health: 93
Northern Health: 39
There are currently 8,842 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.
12,608 people are under public health monitoring and a further 113,139 people who tested positive have recovered.
There are now a total of 486 people in hospital due to COVID-19, 160 of whom are in critical care — ICU or acute care units.
Four new people have died from COVID-related causes making the provincial death toll 1,554.
Outbreaks
There are two new health-care outbreaks at Craigdarroch Care Centre (Island) and Sandalwood Retirement Resort (Interior).
There are currently 5 outbreaks in long-term care and assisted-living facilities and 7 outbreaks in acute-care facilities.

Island Health
Island Health reported 24 new cases and 301 active cases on the island today.
Breakdown of cases on Vancouver Island:
- South Vancouver Island – Active cases: 190 (-1) │Total Cases: 1, 624 (+18)
- Central Vancouver Island –Active cases: 79 (-5) │Total Cases: 2,210 (+3)
- North Vancouver Island – Active cases: 32 (0) │ Total Cases: 600 (+2)
30 people remain in hospital with 2 in ICU.
There was one new death in the Island Health region.
34 people have died since the pandemic began.
Vaccinations and Variants
To date, 1,542,066(+41,636) doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in BC, 88,663 of which are second doses.
Variants of concern were not updated.
As of yesterday, there were a total number of 6,179 confirmed variant cases, 163 cases are active and the remaining people recovered.
Of that total, 4,041 cases were of the UK variant, 76 cases were of the South Africa variant, and 2,062 cases of the Brazil variant.
