GoFundMe launched for Nanaimo woman shot while helping friend through mental health episode

A GoFundMe has been started for a Nanaimo wife and mother of three who was accidentally shot while saving her friend.

On Saturday, April 3rd, Regina Hampson was involved in a tragic accident along with her friend, who was suffering through a severe mental health episode and was threatening to kill himself with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun.

According to the fundraiser, Hampson intervened, the two struggled, and the shotgun accidentally fired.

“As a result, Regina was shot with a 12 gauge shotgun. The majority of the damage was done to Regina’s face and hand,” said the GoFundMe.

Regina is currently in Vancouver, undergoing surgery in an attempt to save her right eye and her thumb. A video update on GoFundMe from her husband suggested the right thumb will be saved.

“They are doing everything they can to limit the amount of disfigurement she will be left with. Regina has a very long road of recovery ahead of her,’ said the fundraiser.

The GoFundMe has a fundraising goal of $45,000 and, as of this publication, it has reached over $41,000.
