BC health officials report 974 new COVID-19 cases since Friday

The BC Ministry of Health reported 974 new cases of COVID-19 for a three-day period on Monday, May 24th.

There have been a total of 142,347 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. 136,603 people who tested positive have recovered.

From Friday, May 21st to Saturday, May 22nd there were 356 new cases. From Saturday May 22nd to Sunday, May 23rd there were 325 new cases and in the last 24 hours there were a further 293 new cases.

New cases were reported in these health regions:

Vancouver Coastal Health: 157
Fraser Health: 630
Island Health: 25
Interior Health: 117
Northern Health: 44

There was one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There are currently 3,953 (-554) active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

Of the active cases, 292 individuals are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 96 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

There were 12 new deaths from COVID-related causes, making the provincial death toll at 1,679.

Vaccinations

As of last week, 2,885,488 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered in BC. 147,144 of those were second doses.

“As we look to tomorrow and the announcement of the restart plan, we encourage everyone to stay the course today. Until tomorrow’s announcement, there are no changes for individuals or businesses,” health officials said in today’s statement.

“As we enjoy the final day of this long weekend, let’s remember to stay local and be kind to one another. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday Monday.”
