They say laughter is the best medicine, and according to a recently released report, many do live by that rule.

So, just how funny are Canadians?

New research by LeoVegas measured just that: how much Canadians like to laugh.

LeoVegas found that in the survey of 1,022 Canadians, just over half (57 per cent) of Canadian’s laugh every day, with the average person laughing five times per week.

When looking at how this varies by gender, men (55 per cent) and women (59 per cent) admit to laughing every single day.

35–44-year-olds laugh most often, and 45–54-year-olds laugh the least often.

Sadly, 2 per cent of the population admit they only laugh once a year.

But with so much funny content out there these days, what exactly are people laughing at?

The nation said their main source of comedy comes from their friends and family (45 per cent) with 49 per cent of Canadians loving a good one-liner, and 48 per cent of Canada laughing out loud for a sweet meme.

One in ten (10 per cent) admitted to chuckling when an inappropriate situation arose.

This just proves how subjective comedy really is.

And just like how what someone finds funny is different, the way that people laugh is also pretty different .

Whether you snort, wheeze, or spit when you laugh, LeoVegas also took a poll on laughter styles.

When asked to describe their laughter, Canada’s most popular styles were ‘the giggler’ (24 per cent), ‘the cackler’ (24 per cent), and ‘the crier’ (15 per cent).

Maybe the knee-slappers are taking a COVID timeout.

The poll marked which Canadian provinces and territories laugh the most, with BC coming in second, Nova Scotia coming in at third, and New Brunswick reigning as the most humorous province.

BC are more prone to a powerful cackle (28 per cent), with residents (54 per cent) finding the one-liner to be the funniest form of comedy and 56 per cent of us that finding that friends and family provide the main source of our laughs.

“It’s often said that laughter and joy are the best types of medicine, and so it’s great to see that Canadians are still finding happiness in everyday life despite the uncertain times we have faced over the past year,” said Mark Cheeswright, Country Manager at LeoVegas.

“We would always recommend making the most of each moment, especially those that tickle your soul.”
