CRD acquires over 13 hectares of land in Highlands to add to Mount Work Regional Park

Mount Work Regional Park just got a whole lot bigger after the Capital Regional District (CRD) announced the acquisition of new land on Monday.

The land located near Munn Road in the Highlands was owned by a family for 41 years. It consists of 13.8 hectares of undeveloped land mainly consisting of second-growth Douglas fir forest, with intermittent patches of open rock bluffs.

“My family has owned and cherished the property for 41 years. Although it has been difficult to let go of these lands, from an environmental perspective we can think of no better use of the land than to have it revert to park to maintain the beauty of the natural landscape forevermore,” said Waultraut Schnarr, the previous landowner.

“CRD Regional Parks are a worthy land steward who will hold it for the common good, and allow the general public access and enjoyment of the rich forest, mossy knolls, diverse flora and fauna, and beautiful vistas – in memory of my husband Gunter Schnarr who was a protector and steward of the natural environment.”

With the previous acquisition of 12.1 hectares in December 2020, the CRD has added almost 26 hectares of forested land to Mount Work Regional Park in the last six months.

Funding for the purchase was provided through the CRD’s Land Acquisition Fund, established in 2000.

The CRD is in the process of drafting a management plan for Mount Work Regional Park that will determine visitor use, park development, and conservation efforts. The management plan is set to be finalized between Winter 2021 and Spring 2022.

Mount Work is one of the largest regional parks in the region and is the dominant hill on the horizon from many vantage points in Saanich, Victoria, and the Saanich Peninsula.
