A crash involving a pair of semi-trailers on the Nanaimo Parkway has sent one driver to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The hospitalized victim, a 35-year-old woman, was driving one of the transport trucks involved in the collision.

Nanaimo RCMP say her truck collided with the rear of another transport truck, operated by a 71-year-old man.

The crash happened at approximately 7:40 a.m. Wednesday morning and led to an extended road closure of the northbound lanes on Nanaimo Parkway, north of Northfield Road.

Police say the 35-year-old woman is still in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The other driver was not injured and remained on the scene. He was cooperative with investigators.

RCMP say both vehicles have been removed from the roadway and will undergo mechanical inspections. The road reopened to traffic shortly before 4 p.m.

The investigation is continuing into the incident, and Nanaimo RCMP are seeking motorists who may have dash cam footage of the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP traffic unit at 250-754-2345.
