Oak Bay asks for public input as district mulls secondary suite changes

Share

The District of Oak Bay is asking their residents for feedback as they consider potential changes to their policies around secondary suites.

In July 2018, council first directed district staff to compile a report on secondary suites, which currently operate unregulated in Oak Bay.

The topic has been floated as one potential remedy to an area lacking in housing availability.

According to the District of Oak Bay’s draft plan for secondary suites, a 2014 survey found 78 per cent of respondents were in favour of permitting and regulating the units.

The current public survey seeks feedback on the draft plan. It represents the second-to-last step in Oak Bay’s five-phase process to implement a secondary suite framework.

“We know our residents have a good sense of both the opportunities and potential challenges that different approaches to regulating suites can bring,” stated Mayor Kevin Murdoch.

“We encourage residents to provide their valuable feedback by completing the Survey questions and open-ended input sections. The thoughtful insights we receive from the public will help Council assess potential approaches.”

Residents interested in completing the survey can do so online at connect.oakbay.ca/secondary-suites-study.

Paper copies can also be obtained by emailing planning@oakbay.ca, calling 250-598-2042, or picking up copies at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre, 1975 Bee Street.

Completed paper survey can be returned at the mail slot by the front door of Municipal Hall, 2167 Oak Bay Avenue.

The survey will be open until June 3, 2021.
