A school and several homes were evacuated today after explosives were located in Duncan.

On Friday, May 14th, the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were made aware of some explosives that were located after a resident discovered them while gardening in the 3000-block of Auchinachie Road.

The person immediately left the area and contacted RCMP.

Police said they evacuated homes nearby as a precaution. Additionally, Mt. Prevost Middle School was notified of the ongoing incident and classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day.

Currently, students and staff have relocated to the Somenos soccer fields.

RCMP are asking people to plan their routes to avoid Sherman Road in the area of Auchinachie Road.

“Specialized members of the Explosive Disposal Unit are enroute to examine, and make a determination on how to proceed as safe as possible,” said Corporal Chris Manseau, BC RCMP spokesperson.

“We’re currently in the preliminary stages of the investigation, but these explosives appear to have been historically stored where they were found, but that is still to be determined”

This investigation is expected to last several hours.
