A VicPD service dog helped officers sniff out a wanted man who had gone to ground during a brief pursuit Saturday evening.

Police say the pursuit began shortly after 11:30 p.m. on May 1 when officers responded to the 900-block of North Park Street for a report of a man lying on the ground.

When officers arrived they found a man who said he was simply resting and not in medical distress. Shortly after, they learned he was wanted on warrants out of Saanich for breach of probation and theft.

The man fled before officers could take him into custody.

A police service dog, Jonny, was deployed in the area. Jonny was able to track the suspect to the 900-block of Pembroke Street, where the man was found hiding in a bush.

He was arrested without further incident, and no one was injured.

Police say the 24-year-old male suspect has numerous convictions for offences including robbery and assault causing bodily harm. He was taken to cells and held for a court appearance.
