McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. (Capital Regional District)

If you live in Esquimalt or Saanich and have noticed a strange odour in the air, you’re not alone.

The CRD has issued an odour advisory for areas around the two municipalities as they carry out maintenance at two facilities.

The CRD says that commissioning activities will likely produce odours that can be smelled near the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant in Esquimalt and the Residuals Treatment Facility (RTF) located north of Hartland Landfill in Saanich.

Although CRD staff and contractors are making every effort to limit the source and impact of the odour to be mindful of locals, you may notice the odour in the air intermittently.

“The CRD is mindful of the impact this facility’s commissioning process has on residents and grateful to both our local community and recreational users for their patience,” the CRD stated.

They will provide regular updates and continue to monitor the odour issue as work proceeds.
