Evo Car Share expands service to Victoria this summer

Victoria will have more options for car-sharing this summer, as Evo Car Share announced they will be expanding to B.C.’s capital.

The BCAA-created service says they are launching operations in Victoria on August 1st, and anyone with a driver’s license can join with advance signup starting today.

“There’s something special about Victoria living and lifestyle,” said Dave Wharf, Evo’s Senior Manager of Business Operations.

“We’re excited to add a new, convenient choice for Victorians looking for ways to get around town. Thanks to everyone who’s been asking us to bring Evo here – we can’t wait!”

Like other car-share services, Evo will have a fleet of vehicles based around the city for members.

80 Toyota Prius hybrids will be available in a 20 square kilometre “home zone” in downtown Victoria.

Vehicles must be picked up and dropped off in this area, or at a special “satellite zone” at Camosun College’s Lansdowne campus.

Evo says they will have designated free parkade spots, street parking in residential areas, and free metered parking.

The vehicles can be accessed with a smartphone app or by tapping a membership card on a reader. Fees are charged by the minute, hour or day depending on usage.

Currently, those rates are $0.41/minute, $14.99/hour, $89.99/day, plus a $1.00 fee per trip.

There is also a one-time $35 fee sign-up fee, and a $2 annual operator fee.

BCAA members will have their sign-up fee waived and also receive a 10 per cent usage credit.

Evo says they are hoping their service will allow Victorians to get around without the need for owning a second or even a first car.

Vehicles will also come equipped with roof racks to allow the transportation of bicycles.

“It’s great to see more car-sharing coming to Victoria,” said City of Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps.

“We know our residents are sustainably minded and eager to find solutions that can mitigate the climate crisis. Any options that can provide alternatives to car ownership are a win for the community.”

Until June 23rd, Victorians can sign up for free with Evo and also receive 100 free driving minutes.

Sign-up information and details on this one-time discount are available at evo.ca/Victoria.
