A young woman perished in a fire early this morning in Mill Bay after alerting other residents of the danger, RCMP say.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP were called to the blaze just after 2:30 a.m. on June 10th, which had caught in a residence on the Malahat Nation in Mill Bay.

Officers arrived to find the fire had completely engulfed the home. Four residents were outside, and were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

An 18-year-old woman did not make it out of the house. According to RCMP, she alerted other residents to the fire.

Firefighters discovered her body inside after extinguishing the blaze. The Shawnigan Lake RCMP say they will not be releasing her identity.

“RCMP is working with closely with the local area fire department and Island District General Investigation Section in an effort to identify the cause of the fire,” stated S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP.

“While the investigation is still in it’s infancy, early indications are the fire was not criminal.”

The BC Coroners Service will also be conducting its own investigation into the woman’s death.

Anyone with information on the fire who has not already spoken with police is asked to contact the Shawnigan Lake RCMP.
