If you’re like most people, you’ve long abandoned cable TV for the commercial-less streaming services and social media that the world has so abundantly offered.
Which means that the announcement that MuchMusic is returning on July 7th is probably a surprise – not because it’s back, but mostly because you didn’t know it was gone.
But it’s true that after years of floundering programming, MuchMusic was effectively discontinued in March 2020.
Now, Bell Media confirmed that one of Canada’s most influential pop-culture brands, MuchMusic, would return this July 7th.
Yet instead of going back to cable, MuchMusic will be teaming up for its reimagined, official relaunch, available 24/7 exclusively across TikTok.
@muchMuch Music is back. July 7th. In partnership with @tiktok #MuchMusic #MuchLove
TikTok will now exclusively house MuchMusic’s most popular shows like Video On Trial, Intimate and Interactive, and MuchMusic Spotlight for multiple social media platforms, among other programming like live music streaming and interviews.
“With hosts and creators that speak directly to Gen Z and younger Millennials, the all-new multiplatform MuchMusic stays true to its spirit as a seminal brand with an authentic voice,” said Stewart Johnston, Senior Vice-President, Sales & Sports, Bell Media.
“Tailor made for today’s always-on youth audience, MuchMusic doubles down as the essential destination for music and pop culture content. We are so thrilled to offer up an unbeatable lineup of opportunities for our clients.”
MuchMusic housed a lot of Canadian cultural icons we’ve come to know and love today, from Nardwuar the Human Serviette to Ed the Sock and George Strombolopolous (oh how we miss his goatee), and Bell Media has promised to bring that same influence.
In other news, Ed the Sock recently pulled himself from his drawer to announce the launch of NewMusicNation – a promise of programming that would return the spirit of the MuchMusic kids used to know and love.
Now MuchMusic promises to bring the “diverse” programming with “cutting-edge comedies, unscripted series, and the latest Hollywood blockbusters while running alongside the MuchMusic social channels,” said Adam Burchill, Head of Music, TikTok Canada
“MuchMusic has played an essential part in shaping the musical landscape for generations. Today, TikTok is redefining the way that fans discover and engage with their favourite music and artists, and I’m excited for our platform to bring MuchMusic to a new generation of fans not just in Canada, but around the world.”
So, download the app and forget what you knew, MuchMusic is back and it’s comin’ for you…on TikTok!
