VicPD are crediting the presence of a police dog for the peaceful surrender Tuesday night of a knife-wielding suspect.
The incident began at the Bay Centre in Victoria when police were called shortly after 10 p.m. on June 15th for a report of a man with a knife.
According to the report, the man had threatened security officers at the mall in the 1100-block of Douglas Street.
Officers had confronted the man after he jumped on several patio tables outside. He brandished a knife, threatened the officers, then fled on foot.
VicPD was able to locate the suspect in the 1400-block of Douglas Street. He was still in possession of a knife and was non-compliant.
Police say the presence of a service dog, Hitch, compelled the man to surrender. He was arrested without further incident.
The man was taken into custody and later released with a court date and conditions. He faces charges of assault with a weapon and uttering threats.
