(Victoria Symphony)

The classical music scene is alive and well in Victoria, and despite the trying times, the Victoria Symphony and Pacific Opera Victoria have joined together to bring their magic to your screens in a pair of online concerts designed to fully immerse you in the experience.

Multiple cameras have been added to the concert hall, bringing their performances online for opera and orchestra lovers.

After the COVID-19 pandemic silenced both their seasons, the Victoria Symphony and Pacific Opera Victoria are pleased to offer a two-night premiere of Benjamin Britten’s small-scale epic masterpieces.

The concerts can be viewed online free of charge through either the Victoria Symphony or Pacific Opera Victoria, though donations are always welcome.

Conducted by Maestro Timothy Vernon, the double-bill is viewable from June 10th, to June 11th and brings sounds from Pacific Opera Victoria and the Victoria Symphony.

The shows feature mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy, tenor Colin Ainsworth, horn player Alana Despins, along with musicians of the Victoria Symphony.

Phaedra premieres on Thursday, June 10th at 7:30 p.m:

When forbidden passion cannot stay silent, a tragic hero journeys through blame and lust on her tempestuous search for serenity. Britten’s last vocal work covers the range of a full-scale opera in 15 minutes. Phaedra is a musical ascension to annihilation.

Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings premieres on Friday, June 11th at 7:30 p.m:

An evocative dialogue between horn and voice guides you through the sparkling glory of day and the seeping horrors of night. Powerful music shimmers with gemstone colours as the wild, poetic splendor of nature is celebrated through this eight-movement anthology.

You can stream both of these concerts for free at victoriasymphony.ca and pacificopera.ca starting June 10th.
