A unique rooftop vegetable garden has set up at a downtown Victoria shelter

A unique rooftop vegetable garden has been set up at a downtown homeless shelter.

Our Place Society and FED, a local non profit dedicated to food sustainability, erected a series of vegetable planters on its roof, four storeys above 919 Pandora Avenue.

The RBC Foundation also contributed $10,000 to the project.

The garden will provide locally-sourced, farm-fresh vegetables to residents of Our Place.

“Proper nutrition is vitally important to daily health. And just because someone is struggling with poverty, addiction issues or mental health challenges doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the best meal possible,” said Our Place CEO Julian Daly.

At the same time, New Roads, Our Place’s therapeutic recovery community in View Royal, has been growing an abundance of fresh vegetables being used in-house and distributed to the downtown location.

New Roads residents have been tending the indoor and outdoor gardens, harvesting the vegetables, and taking care of a roost of friendly, egg-bearing chickens.

With rising food costs and a desire to serve the freshest and healthiest food to those who struggle with poverty, Our Place has integrated this rooftop vegetable garden at its downtown location to better serve its residents and nourish them.
