Nanaimo RCMP release photo of suspect vehicle used in attack on homeless man

Nanaimo RCMP have released a photo of the car they say was used by a group of people who drove over a homeless man earlier this month.

Though the photo is quite blurry, the vehicle appears to be a black coupe.

On Saturday, July 10th, near the intersection of Victoria Avenue and 102 Street, a Nanaimo homeless man was accosted by a group of people in a black vehicle.

The victim, 45-year-old Charles Samuel Salter, was pushing a shopping cart along Victoria Avenue near 102nd Street when he was suddenly bear-sprayed, run over by a car, and then left on the roadway.

Salter was rushed to hospital and, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser set up by his daughter, Salter suffered multiple broken bones, and he requires an intubator to help him breathe.

Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP described the act as “extremely troubling.”

“This incident is extremely troubling as it appears from all accounts the victim was targeted for being a marginalized person,” said O’Brien.

The fundraiser raised over $10,000 for the victim.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
