Q̓ʷalayu House opens in Campbell River to support North Island families with sick children

After three years of fundraising and construction, the Q̓ʷalayu House has opened in Campbell River.

The 10-bedroom home was inspired by Victoria’s Jeneece Place, a home-away-from-home for families with children who are receiving care in Victoria.

Q̓ʷalayu House will house North Island families as well as families from the nearby Gulf Islands who travel for pediatric or maternal care.

“Q̓ʷalayu House was designed to serve as a true home away from home for families to alleviate stress during some of the most challenging periods of their lives,” The BC Children’s House Foundation said  in a release Monday.

According to the foundation, more than 25% of children in the North Island region live in low-income households and the number of new mothers under 20 years old are three times higher than anywhere else in BC. Both of these statistics support the decision to build the community home in this area.

Accommodation at Q̓ʷalayu House will be made through a referral process through health care professions, social workers and other family support services who will contact the community home on behalf of families.

Families will begin to move in later this summer.

The Foundation’s Q̓ʷalayu House fundraising campaign began in 2019 with a goal of $7 million dollars.

Since then, the Vancouver Island community raised a majority of the goal through generous donations.

The Foundation is still accepting donations in hopes to meet the final $1.8 million of it’s goal. These donations will help fund the first five years of the home’s operating costs.
