A man being investigated as a suspect in an assault was arrested in a dramatic scene in downtown Victoria yesterday.

Just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29th, a suspect wanted in connection to an assault by choking and assault causing bodily harm barricaded himself inside a suite of a supportive housing facility in the 700-block of Pandora Avenue.

Crisis negotiators were deployed to the scene to negotiate with the man.

VicPD closed Pandora Avenue between Douglas Street and Blanshard Street and nearby residents were evacuated from the area.

Officers deployed irritant gas on the suspect after several hours of unsuccessful negotiating with the man.

He was arrested without further incident and without injury, and taken into custody where he remains.

Pandora Avenue was reopened to traffic just before 5:30 p.m.
