RCMP has confirmed the body of a 19-year-old swimmer who went missing last week has been located.

The teen was swimming in St. Mary Lake near North End Road on August 12th when he went missing near a dock.

A massive search was conducted over the next two days, which included Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue, RCMP, and Salt Spring Island Search & Rescue.

Emergency crews utilized drones, helicopters and brought an additional dive team in search of the young man.

Sadly, his body was found on Saturday, August 14th in the same area he had gone missing by members of the RCMP Under Water Recovery Team who were called in to assist with the investigation.

“The Salt Spring RCMP wish to thank Salt Spring Search and Rescue, Salt Spring Fire Department, BC Ambulance, and the Salt Spring Community for their support for the family of the missing man,” said Sgt. Clive Seabrook, Salt Spring RCMP Detachment Commander.

The BC Coroners Service said it is also conducting a “concurrent fact-finding investigation into this unexpected death.”

The man’s identity has not been released.
