A COVID-19 vaccination is expected to be available for children 12 and under in Canada by the end of this year.

During a live press conference today, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided updates to those inquiring about COVID-19 vaccinations for children age 12 and under.

Currently, there are no COVID-19 vaccinations approved for children 12 and under in Canada.

However, Henry revealed both Pfizer and Moderna have completed dosing studies and have moved on to Stage 3 in their trials to create vaccines for children aged 6 months to 6 years and 6 years to 12 years old.

This stage studies non-inferiority and safety of the vaccine compared to the adult vaccine.

The test will allow them to know if the vaccine results in the same immune response as the adult vaccine.

According to Henry, Pfizer is likely to complete this stage in September or October, resulting in a vaccination possibly becoming available for those aged 6 to 12 by the end of the calendar year.

Henry also revealed Pfizer has new formulation for their childhood vaccination which may also be fridge stable.

Moderna is slightly behind Pfizer, however, a vaccine for this age group is expected in early 2022.
