Fall seedling distribution for City of Victoria gardening program begins

Share

Fall seedlings are now available through the City of Victoria’s “Get Growing, Victoria!” program, with the first distribution starting today.

The program, now in its second year, offers food seedlings for free to residents, with priority given to those who experience barriers to growing their own food.

This includes people who have been disproportionately impacted by the economic impacts of the pandemic, racialized individuals, Indigenous people, and low-income families or individuals.

The seedlings are grown with community partners and in City-operated gardens and greenhouses. In 2020, the program distributed over 81,500 seedlings and also handed out over 200 cubic yards of gardening materials such as mulch.

The seedlings which are being offered for fall harvest include:

  • Cabbage – Lennox (Organic)
  • Mustard Greens – Mizuna
  • Cauliflower – Amazing
  • Kolhrabi – Kolibri
  • Swiss Chard – Fordhook Giant
  • Romaine Lettuce – Rouge D’Hiver
  • Kale – Improved Siberian
  • Broccoli – Green Magic
  • Parsley – Forest Green
  • Loose Leaf Lettuce – Grand Rapids

Fall crops are now being distributed, from August 17 to September 1. A full list of dates, times and locations is available on the City of Victoria website.

Certain dates are available by pre-registration only, and others offer public distribution for walk-ups.
