One person has suffered life-threatening injuries and has been air-lifted to a Victoria hospital after crashing his off-road motorcycle earlier today.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the crash occurred around noon on Tuesday, August 3rd,  in the 3700 block of Rock City Road.

Witnesses told police they heard a crash and came out to find a man and a bike lying in the ditch.

Police believe the motorcyclist was travelling westbound on Rock City Road when he lost control of his bike and drove off the roadway to the right.

“While it is only early in the investigation, it appears that speed may have been a contributing factor,” said Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Investigators were also unable to find a motorcycle helmet at the scene of the crash.

Police said Rock City Road will be closed for an extended time as investigators examine the scene.

Eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Ocean Pearl Terrace while westbound traffic is being diverted onto Barrington Road.

Investigators are asking for any motorists that were in the area at the time of the crash to please check their dashcam video.

Anyone with footage of the crash or any pre-collision are asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754- 2345.
