Nanaimo RCMP and search and rescue crews are currently searching for a recreational diver after they failed to resurface during a dive near the Winchelsea Islands.

The diver was accompanied by his friend on a 14-foot vessel at the time of the incident.

When the diver did not resurface, his friend on the boat called an individual on shore who in turn eventually called 911.

The incident is said to have taken place at approximately 10 a.m. on Friday morning.

Due to a language barrier, there was approximately a two-hour time delay in reporting the incident.

The missing diver is in his 40s, of South Asian descent, and is said to speak very little English.

At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a black wet suit and had a diving tank attached.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre is currently searching the area via hovercraft and helicopter.

A Canadian Coast Guard vessel along with a volunteer rescue crew are working to search in the water, and ground-based Search and Rescue personnel are searching the coastline for the missing man.

If anyone has information on the whereabouts of the missing diver, they are asked to call 911 or the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2021-30371.
