VicPD and Coast Guard recover stolen canoe from Gorge Waterway

Share

VicPD are seeking information regarding a suspect who stole a canoe over the weekend.

On Saturday, VicPD officers arrived at the Gorge Waterway after receiving a report of a missing canoe.

The owner, who reported the canoe missing to police, has owned the canoe since the 1980’s, and has circumnavigated Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii in it.

The officers searched the waterway but were unable to locate the canoe.

On Monday, patrol officers received word that the stolen canoe had been spotted on the Gorge Waterway. They quickly attended to the scene accompanied by the Coast Guard.

The canoe was spotted along the waterway with the suspect travelling in it.

Upon being told he was under arrest for possession of stolen property, the suspect paddled ashore, abandoned the canoe and fled the area on foot.

The officers have identified the suspect and are seeking a warrant for his arrest. However, the file remains under investigation.

Earlier this month, VicPD issued a warning to the public after a string of recent, ongoing thefts at Victoria harbours.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact  VicPD Report at (250) 995-7654. To report what you know anonymously, call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
