Facebook goes through major rebrand, company now known as Meta

Facebook has officially changed its company name.

In an announcement from Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, on Thursday morning, he told users that the Facebook company would now be called ‘Meta.’

“The metaverse is the next evolution of social connection,” the Meta.com website says.

“Our company’s vision is to help bring the metaverse to life, so we are changing our name to reflect our commitment to this future.”

Meta is meant to be a more immersive experience, Zuckerberg says, incorporating 3D digital spaces into online socialization.

Zuckerberg’s hope, he says, is for the “metaverse” to replace the world wide web.

“Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future,” Zuckerberg says.

“Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and identity on what we’re building toward.”

Meta will be expanding into the world of virtual reality, augmented reality, and smart glasses as a way to create a more immersive experience.

The rebrand also happens to coincide around the same time that Facebook had a major blackout, and a whistleblower stands trial in front of US authorities.

It’s not clear yet whether the Facebook website will undergo the rebrand.
