Strong southeasterly winds and heavy rain slated for most of Vancouver Island

Dig out those candles, Victoria, because we’re in for a wet one – weekend, that is.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of Vancouver Island warning of strong winds and heavy rainfall starting this Sunday.

According to the weather agency, extremely windy conditions are in the forecast on Sunday and Monday for Vancouver Island and neighbouring regions along the Strait of Georgia.

A strong rapidly deepening low pressure system from the Pacific is expected to approach west of Vancouver Island on Sunday and begin to bring rain and strong southeasterly winds of 70 to 90 km/h with gusts possibly exceeding 100 km/h to the west and north coast of Vancouver Island.

Strong southeasterly winds of 50 to 70 km/h gusting to 90 will develop over East Vancouver Island Sunday afternoon.

The province is urging British Columbians on Vancouver Island and the South Coast to be prepared.

The weather alert has been issued for the following locations:

West Vancouver Island, North Vancouver Island, East Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, Southern sections of Howe Sound, Southern Gulf Islands, Greater Victoria, Metro Vancouver – Southwest, Central, North Shore especially over exposed coastal areas.

The strong winds will persist through Sunday night and strengthen on Monday morning across the coastal regions of the Strait of Georgia, including Greater Victoria, Southern Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast.
