The driver who crashed into the Bay Centre multiple times Sunday night was impaired by drugs, according to VicPD.

Shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday, October 24th, the driver of a Kia Soul crashed into the Marble Slab Creamery at the Bay Centre.

Following the initial collision, video surveillance from the mall shows the vehicle reverse, then drive forward once again at high speed, crashing through a construction area at the mall and into the Bay Centre building once again into the Owly Cafe.

VicPD were called to the 1100-block of Douglas Street after the vehicle which had driven into the building.

Police said the driver of the vehicle ignored police direction and attempted to flee the scene.

Officers deployed a taser on the man and pulled the man from the vehicle, where he continued to resist arrest and was taken to the ground and eventually taken into custody without further incident.

Video sent to Victoria Buzz by Obi-Wan Kinobe shows the officers attempting to coherse the man out of the vehicle as he resists, and when they eventually do get him out, the man can be seen staggering as he continues to combat the police.

“Based on the man’s behaviour, officers believed that he was impaired by drugs,” VicPD said in a media release.

“Officers attempted to administer the Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), however the man reported non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services Paramedics for medical treatment and for additional investigation,” said VicPD.

The man was later released with a 24-hour driving prohibition pending further investigation into drug-impaired driving. No one else was injured as a result of this incident.
